Israel’s air campaign against Iran’s nuclear program is a momentous event in the modern history of the Middle East. If it succeeds in thwarting the Islamic republic’s acquisition of atomic arms, it will be a boon to the civilized world.

“We struck at the heart of Iran’s nuclear enrichment program,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in his speech announcing Operation Rising Lion on Friday. He disclosed an attack on the nuclear facility at Natanz, targeted strikes on nuclear scientists working on weaponization, and attacks on Iran’s ballistic-missile program. Iranian media reported that several top scientists and generals, including Iran’s chief of staff, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps chief and IRGC drone and missile chiefs, were killed.

The Israeli prime minister said the military operation will continue for as long as it takes to remove the hardware for the fearsome weaponry that would pose an existential threat to the Jewish state. “Israel will never allow those who call for our annihilation to develop the means to achieve that goal,” he said. That policy is eminently sound in view of both the character and the conduct of the regime seated in Tehran that denies the Holocaust while pledging to repeat it.
